Ceramides: the quiet guardians of your skin barrier

One ingredient is being discussed more and more, in dermatologists' offices and on social media: ceramides. And for good reason: they are among the key elements that determine how your skin looks and feels.

What are ceramides?

Ceramides are natural lipids (fats) that make up about 50% of the structure of the skin's outer layer. Picture the skin barrier as a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides are the mortar holding them together.

When this “mortar” is lacking, the wall becomes porous. Moisture escapes and environmental pollutants enter more easily. The result is dry, red, reactive skin that ages faster after irritation.

Why do ceramides become depleted?

With age, skin produces fewer ceramides; their amount decreases significantly after 30. Younger skin can also lack them because of:

  • Overly harsh cleansers
  • Washing with hot water
  • Dry weather, especially in winter
  • Exfoliating too often
  • Chronic stress and lack of sleep

How can you tell your skin lacks ceramides?

If your skin often feels tight, becomes red after contact with products or is difficult to keep hydrated, its barrier may be damaged. Other signs include flaking, itching and increased sensitivity to products that previously caused no problems.

Ceramides in Korean cosmetics

K-beauty recognised the value of ceramides long ago. Here are products available at bebre.lt:

COSRX The Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizer — a lightweight moisturiser specifically designed to restore the skin barrier. Ideal for sensitive and reactive skin.

Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream — a classic cream with ceramides and traditional Korean ingredients. Nourishes, soothes and revitalises skin.

TIRTIR Ceramic Cream — a popular ceramide range for strengthening the skin barrier and creating a radiant glow.

Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream — a gel cream combining the effects of collagen and ceramides. Provides elasticity and lasting hydration.

How to use them correctly

Ceramides work best as the final moisturising step, locking in moisture from previously applied products. They pair well with all ingredients: there is no need to fear combining them with retinol, acids or vitamin C. On the contrary, ceramides help skin tolerate active ingredients better.

Why are they worthwhile?

Ceramides are not a passing trend. They are an essential skin-health ingredient with cumulative effects. A strong barrier means fewer problems, better performance from other products and slower ageing.

If you do not yet have a ceramide product in your routine, it is the first addition worth considering.
